26 November 2008: The Sordid Saga of Mumbai..WHAT LIES AHEAD?

It goes without saying that the nation is disgustingly shocked due to miserable state of affairs in Mumbai on 26 November 2008. As we lament, weep, sulk, mourn over this chaos unleashed, let us ponder over what lies further? What are the challenges ahead?

The masterminds behind the attack- meticulous planning to enter hotel, playing upon lacuna in laws of sea, movement of arms and food in store, are few things that gave a jolt to the existing machinery of the State. What is in their minds who have enacted it? Are they human as they profess no respect for sanctity of like? What religion they adhere to when they violate the basic fundamental ethos of religion – love, care, fraternity? How long can we blame the state as being soft on terror when its dirty fangs have not spared a single part of globe? The nation stood politically undivided and the nonsense gimmick of regional chauvinism by Raj Thackrej stood shamefully exposed to the ebb.
There is need to condemn this terrorism in unanimous terms, building consent on fighting back together as the nation that we will not loose on National Integrity at any cost. While we capture these emotional-psychological strands, at the societal-political level we need federal agency to tackle the menace of terrorism between the Union and State Government.

Very true..every time something like this happens we mourn over it for some time and move on.But life stops for those who were a part of this brutality. The worst is that India never learns the lesson after such attacks...It happened once in America and they saw to it that it never happened again(GOD forbid)..We just highlight the 'indomitable' spirit of Indians and move on after every tragedy..its time the our intelligence and security system is strengthened so that we don't see any other city under the grip of terrorists again..Moreover just a look at the remuneration of the army , officers et al will make us ashamed ..a mere compensation after the death is not enough for those who fight for our safety..its time we realise these things and not just "MOVE ON ".....nidhi wadhwa

Why did we wait for so long? Mumbai is just one more nail in the coffin of our atrophying political system. The were straws in the wind beginning from the Babri Mosque demolition, Bombay riots, the 1993 blasts, the Godhra carnage, the Gujrat pogram and recently the Orissa Christian cleansing!

Perhaps its ironic that our collective consciousness, usurped as it were by the media frenzy over 26/11 ,now should rise in unision to shake us out of our slumber when the symbols of the high and mighty are under attack.

What happened in Mumbai is condemnable and it always will be. it also draws our attention to how selective we can get in uniting , it also tells us a poignant tale of how callous we are in showing indifference to the poor dying in their thousands not too long ago in the Bihar floods!

Sometimes I wonder that our sensibility is no longer our own but has become something we readily consume from the media.

Cheers,

The Sophist.

P.S. I have written something which looks at our nationalism and the pressing problems of religion. I would be delighted if you share your thoughts on that with me. Here is the link:
